General Product Information

The human immunoglobulins are purified from human plasma/serum and are supplied in a liquid form. The buffers used are phosphate or tris buffered saline with slightly differing salt concentrations. The IgA, IgG, and IgM are characterized for protein content by absorbance at 280nm using the appropriate extinction coefficients. The purified IgE is tested using the Lowry protein assay. The serum forms of IgE (unpurified) are tested by EIA.

Human Immunoglobulins are a diverse class of human antibodies made up mainly by Immunoglobulin G which is 80% of the immunoglobulins in human plasma. Immunoglobulins A, D, E, and M make up approximately 20% of the remaining human immunoglobulins. Each class of antibody gets its designation from the heavy and light peptide chains that make up the antibody structure.

Immunoglobulin A is present in seromucous secretions exposed to the external environment such as saliva and tears. IgA provides an early antibacterial and antiviral defense. Immunoglobulin E levels are elevated in individuals with multiple myeloma and severe allergic conditions. Immunoglobulin G is elevated in many disease states including cirrhosis of the liver, hepatitis, and multiple myeloma conditions. Immunoglobulin M is the first immunoglobulin produced during the immune response and the first antibody produced in neonates. Serum levels of IgM are associated with certain autoimmune diseases.
