Avidin is a glycoprotein containing four essentially identical subunits, each of which forms an extremely tight complex with biotin. This affinity makes avidin very useful in the construction of avidin/biotin-based diagnostic formats. Avidin and biotin are routinely conjugated to indicator enzymes, such as horseradish peroxidase and alkaline phosphatase, for use in diagnostic kit development and manufacturing.

Avidin is purified from egg whites and supplied in a lyophilized form. This protein is assayed at a minimum of 10 U/mg protein.
